Feeding the Social Media Monster

I’ve heard many people frame the constant pressure to keep posting as “Feeding the Monster.” You can never post enough or do enough. It’s a never-ending hamster wheel.

The glass-half-empty view is that you’re only as good as your last 9 photos, but the half-full view is you have an opportunity to reinvent yourself with every photo.

How many areas of life can we say that about? There are no contracts. You don’t have to pick a major to graduate and it’s completely free to use so you don’t have to lock in your rate.

If you’re an entrepreneur, I bet the freedom to make your own rules of engagement is a large factor in what drove you to start your own business. Beyond a few restrictions around how long a post can be 

and what format your photo is in, social media doesn’t dictate what you do.

You get infinite opportunities to try something new. And, you call when you are going to bow out for a while. 

But, I hope you choose to get out there and try something new:

Launch that just-for-fun account documenting your obsession with paper clips. 

Create your own IGTV show where you interview your 9-year-old and his friends about politics. 

Announce that big new product and see how many people are willing to pre-order. 

The social media world is always ready for the next great thing.
