Idea

Hey, that was my idea! [cry face]

If you’ve ever created anything online, you’ve probably experienced this. You have a great idea, get ready to hit publish and then a post comes across your feed that is almost exactly what you were working on.

The first impulse is to get discouraged and hit delete. But, let me tell you why this is a good thing.

The online world is kinda like going into the coffee business. There can be a coffee shop on every corner of your town and at 6 am, even though there are dozens of other coffee shops, you’re still standing in line for your latte. The market is never saturated. There’s always room for one more voice, one more similar product.

This is why: No one can say the same thing, in the same way and reach the same people at the same time as you.

In fact, it’s a good thing that other people are doing something similar. It means you’ve hit on something that people actually want.

Your work is to figure out what sets your idea apart from the others. What’s the fresh perspective you bring to the table? And make sure everyone knows it.

As Scott Adams (of Dilbert fame) says: “Ideas are worthless. Execution is everything.”

Many people can have the same idea. It’s what you do with it that matters.
