Issue An Invitation

Social media is meant to be, well, social.

It’s not meant to be an advertising billboard for your stuff.

It’s meant to be a place to connect.

Can you imagine seeing a friend in the grocery store and the first thing you say is: “SALE! Act now! Ends tomorrow!”

No, you’d issue an invitation. You’d say:

“We’re having a party to celebrate, would you like to come?”

“Your support means so much to me. I got a little something to thank you.”

“I know you love this kind of event, would you like to come to one this weekend?”

“You looked like you needed cheering up. Here, I made this for you.”

All the above are gently ways of inviting people to let you help them. This is especially important in direct messages or emails where the communication is one-to-one.

They might still say “no, thank you” but they will never think less of you for treating them like human beings and asking politely.
