The Importance of a Profile Photo

People. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have a professional headshot photo to include in your bio!

If you are using Instagram for your business, you’re going to include your brand logo. You get a pass here. The rest is for authors, speakers, bloggers, creatives and anyone else creating a personal platform on social media.

A good headshot photo includes:

  • You and only you (not of you and your dog/spouse/kids)
  • A neutral background
  • Your current hairstyle
  • A close-up shot (your head from shoulders up, not whole body)

Social media profile photos are so small, you just want to include your face in the circle. That’s all the room you have!

**PRO TIP** Use the same headshot photo and bio information on all your social media platforms. That way people can easily identify the account as yours. I can’t tell how many times I’ve squinted at two profile photos of a woman trying to figure out if they were the same person. We are fairly indistinguishable in those tiny squares.

Does it have to be taken by a professional or in a studio? No, but a professional will make sure that the lighting is good and give you lots of options to choose from to select your favorite shot.

Remember, your social media profile is like the first date. It’s your opportunity to make a good first impression. Having a great profile photo will make you all the more confident when sharing and posting.
